CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . .The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque
women’s soccer player Caitlin Tero (Albuquerque,
N.M./Sandia) and Wartburg College men’s cross country
runner Brian Chenoweth (Geneseo, Ill./J.D.
Darnell) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of
the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 23. The Conference
also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s
eight sports in competition during the week.
Women’s Soccer – Caitlin Tero, University
of Dubuque, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia
Tero, a senior midfielder, scored
four goals and an assist to lead the University of Dubuque to
a 2-0-1 record on the week. Tero assisted on the game-winning
goal late in a 2-1 win at Ashford, scored the lone goal in a
tie with Central and netted three goals in the final seven minutes
against Wisconsin-Stout to turn a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory
for the Spartans.
Men’s
Cross Country – Brian Chenoweth, Wartburg College, Geneseo,
Ill./J.D. Darnell
Chenoweth, a junior, finished third in a field
of 287 runners at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open. He covered
the 8,000-meter course in 26:18.03, 24.02 seconds behind the
meet champion. Competing in a multi-divisional field, Chenoweth’s
time was tops among other league schools in the meet. He also
guided Wartburg to a runner-up team finish, just 11 points behind
Minnesota-Duluth, the eighth-rated team in last week’s
USTFCCCA Division II North Central Region Poll.
Football
– Kurtis Brondyke, Central College, Clinton, Iowa/Clinton
Brondyke, a freshman punter, punted seven times for
281 yards (a 40.1 yard per punt average), landing three of his
seven punts inside the 5-yard line, including two fourth-quarter
punts downed at the 1-yard line to help Central preserve a 17-14
win over Loras. Brondyke has had four punts downed at the 1-yard
line in the past two weeks. Only one of his seven punts in the
Loras game was returnable.
Volleyball
– Jena Goedken, University of Dubuque, Lamont, Iowa/Starmont
Goedken, a senior middle blocker, helped the University
of Dubuque to a 3-2 record on the week, including a 3-1 mark
at the Clarke College Invitational, where she was named to the
All-Tournament Team. Goedken posted 92 kills in four matches
at the Clarke Tournament after opening the week with a 13-kill
performance in a three-game loss at Simpson. Goedken also averaged
1.69 blocks per game on the week.
Women’s
Tennis – Molly Fiala, Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a senior, advanced to the semifinal round
of both the singles and doubles draws at the ITA Midwest Region
Championships in St. Peter, Minn. Fiala posted a trio of singles
wins before falling to eventual champion Jenni White of Gustavus
Adolphus College 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. She also teamed
with Andrea Schupbach to post three doubles wins before being
eliminated from contention by the Gustavus tandem of White and
Sierra Krebsbach. White and Krebsbach went on to win the doubles
title.
Men’s Soccer – Nate DuBois, Loras College, Lane,
Ill./Lemont
DuBois, a freshman goalkeeper,
recorded shutout wins over Augustana (1-0) and Wartburg (2-0)
last week. DuBois recorded four saves against Augustana and
another three in Saturday’s IIAC opener against the Knights.
DuBois’ biggest save came in the second half with Loras
leading 1-0.
Women’s
Cross Country – Emily VanOosbree, Wartburg College, Emmetsburg,
Iowa/Emmetsburg
VanOosbree, a junior, placed second at the UW-Eau
Claire Blugold Open. Competing in a multi-divisional field of
243 runners, VanOosbree traversed the 6,000-meter course in
23:35.12, just 4.49 seconds behind the winner. The top Iowa
Conference finisher at the meet, her finish helped Wartburg
to a third-place finish. The Knights finished ahead of No. 6-ranked
Luther, No. 11-ranked UW-Eau Claire, No. 19-ranked Carleton,
and No. 21-ranked UW-Platteville in the final team standings.
Women’s
Golf – Kate Thompson, Wartburg College, Webster City,
Iowa/Webster City
Thompson, a junior, finished tied for third in
a field of 80 golfers at the Division III Midwest Classic at
Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wis. Thompson fired rounds of
80-83=163 to finish six shots behind the meet’s co-medalists
and was the highest placing Iowa Conference golfer in a field
which contained many of the region’s top teams. She led
her team to a third-place finish.
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Women’s Cross Country – Coe College
freshman Ashley Schnell (Lincoln, Neb./North
Star) placed ninth in a field of 354 runners at the Brissman-Lundeen
Invitational. Schnell, the top Iowa Conference individual in
the event, stopped the clock in 22:32, 42 seconds behind the
individual champion. Coe took 15th place as a team with 380
points.

Men’s Cross Country – Simpson College
junior Eric Osterhaus (Waterville, Iowa/Waukon)
finished fifth of 409 runners at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational.
Osterhaus covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:51, 43 seconds
behind the individual champion. The highest placing Iowa Conference
runner at the event, Osterhaus led the Storm to a ninth-place
team finish with 328 points.

Women’s Golf – Buena Vista University
senior Chelsea Anderson (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm
Lake) finished first at the Central Fall Invitational, firing
rounds of 79-86=165 to finish three shots ahead of the second-place
golfer for her first individual title.
•
Women’s Soccer – Cornell College
senior midfielder Chelsea Coyne (Minneapolis,
Minn./South) recorded her first career hat trick, scoring three
goals and dishing out an assist in a 5-2 win over Buena Vista.
She entered the match with two career goals in 59 matches.
•
Football – Wartburg College senior wide
receiver/defensive back Nick Weber (Cedar Rapids,
Iowa/Xavier) hauled in the eventual game-winning score in the
Knights’ 25-8 win at Luther. Weber also recorded a key
interception early in the fourth quarter as the Norse were driving
for a potential score. He finished with single-game career highs
in receptions (3) and yards receiving (60) and his touchdown
catch was the first of his career.

Volleyball – Cornell College sophomore
outside hitter Kristin Paczosa (Arlington Heights,
Ill./Buffalo Grove) posted 76 kills, 90 digs and 12 total blocks
in six matches last week. Paczosa recorded a kill/dig double-double
in five of six matches and posted highs with 18 kills against
Grinnell Sept. 19 and 22 digs Sept. 22 against Wheaton (Ill.)
