. . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today
that Coe College women’s tennis player Molly Fiala
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and Central College men’s
soccer player Cody Stoermer (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa
City West) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes
of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 14. The Conference
also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s
seven sports in competition during the week.
Men’s
Soccer – Cody Stoermer, Central College, Coralville, Iowa/Iowa
City West
Stoermer, a senior forward, scored five goals
and two assists during the week to lead the Dutch to conference
wins over Simpson (6-1) and Buena Vista (6-2), breaking Central’s
career points record in the process. Against Simpson, Stoermer
netted three goals, including two on penalty kicks, to record
his second hat trick of the season and the third of his career.
Stoermer added two goals and assisted on two others against
the Beavers. He is now within six goals of Central’s career

Women’s
Tennis – Molly Fiala, Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a junior, finished a combined 10-0 on the
week and captured both the Flight A singles and Flight A doubles
titles at the Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Championship.
Fiala opened her week with a pair of victories in a dual at
Cornell – a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pavla Brachova at No. 1
singles and an 8-4 win (with Andrea Schupbach) over Cornell’s
No. 1 doubles team. At the Iowa Conference Championships, Fiala
posted four straight-set wins in Flight A, capturing her second
individual singles title in three years with a 7-5, 6-2 victory
over teammate Hannah Jensen in the championship match. Fiala
paired with Schupbach to post four victories in the Flight A
doubles draw, including a 9-7 win over Jensen and Hillary Allen
of Coe in the final. Fiala and Schupbach battled back from a
7-2 deficit to capture the title. It was also the second doubles
title in three years for Fiala, who missed last year’s
individual championship while competing at the ITA Small College

Football
– Tyler Sherden, Luther College, Rochester, Minn./John
Marshall
Sherden, a senior running back, set a single-game
school record with 269 rushing yards on 37 carries with a touchdown
in a 25-22 victory over Buena Vista, breaking the old mark of
263 set in 1957 by Brad Hustad against Upper Iowa. Sherden,
who averaged 7.3 yards per carry, also caught two balls for
three yards and returned two kickoffs for 40 yards to amass
312 all purpose yards.
Volleyball
– Ashley Rogers, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert
Rogers, a senior outside hitter/middle hitter,
led Wartburg to a 3-2 record on the week, earning all-tournament
honors at the Wartburg Invitational in the process. Rogers notched
96 kills and 60 digs in 17 games, averaging 5.65 and 3.53 per
game, respectively, and recorded double-doubles in four of five
matches. Rogers topped the team in kills (96), block assists
(23), solo blocks (4) and was second-highest in service aces
(7). She also moved over the 400-kill mark for the fourth time
in her career.
Women’s
Soccer – Leanne Carberry, Cornell College, Idledale, Colo./Bear
Creek
Carberry,
a freshman forward, tallied four goals and one assist in three
matches last week, helping the Rams to clinch an IIAC Tournament
berth with wins over Coe (4-0) and Luther (3-2). Carberry leads
Cornell in scoring with points (10 goals, 1 assist).
Men’s
Cross Country – Brian Chenoweth, Wartburg College, Geneseo,
Ill./Geneseo
Chenoweth, a junior, placed seventh in a field
of 172 runners at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational, traversing
the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:38, 43 seconds behind
the winner. Chenoweth led Wartburg individually for the fourth
time this season with his third top-10 effort. He was the highest
finishing Iowa Conference runner in the multi-division field.
Women’s
Cross Country – Janet Dobyns, Luther College, Iowa City,
Iowa/West
Dobyns, a junior, placed second out of a field
of 455 runners at the UW-La Crosse Tori Neubauer Invitational.
Dobyns covered the 6,000-meter course in 21:49, three seconds
behind individual champion Becca Jordahl of UW-River Falls.
Luther placed 7th out of 27 teams with 195 points and was the
highest finishing team from the IIAC at the meet.
