CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College women’s tennis player Kelsie Allen (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) and University of Dubuque football player Michael Zweifel (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 18. The Conference also announced the fourteen Performers of the Week in the Conference’s seven sports in competition during the previous week.
Women’s Tennis – Kelsie Allen, Luther College, Eagan, Minn./Eastview
Allen, a senior, captured the Flight A singles title at the Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Championships, needing third-set tiebreakers to win her quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship matches. She became the first Luther player since Maria Miller in 1999 to with the Conference’s top singles title. Allen and partner Brynne Zinnecker also finished third in Flight A doubles. Football (offense) – Michael Zweifel, University of Dubuque, Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater
Zweifel, a junior wide receiver, broke Iowa Conference single-game records for receptions and receiving yards with a 20-catch, 330-yard, 3-touchdown performance in a 36-33 Dubuque win at Simpson. He broke records held by Dubuque’s Matt Plummer (18 receptions vs. Buena Vista, Oct. 12, 1996) and Simpson’s Jim Henderson (276 yards vs. Wartburg, Nov. 4, 1967). His longest catch of the day was a 46-yard touchdown strike with 16 seconds left in the first half to give the Spartans a 16-13 halftime edge. His 330 yards is the most in Division III this season, surpassing the 295 receiving yards put up by Randolph-Macon’s Earl Peoples against Washington & Lee Oct. 3. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
Football (defense) – Tate Harrison, Coe College, Nevada, Iowa/Nevada
Harrison, a senior linebacker, moved into first place on Coe’s all-time tackles list with seven stops (six solo) and a tackle for loss in a 35-21 win at Wartburg. He now has 318 career tackles. He also scored his first career points on a two-point conversion reception.
Football (special teams) – Zach Kaufman, Buena Vista University, Harlan, Iowa/Harlan Community
Kaufman, a senior placekicker, was a perfect 3-of-3 on PATs and also connected on a career-long 37-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half of a 24-17 homecoming win over Cornell. Kaufman, who is now 3-of-3 on field goal attempts this season, also averaged 56.4 yards on five kickoffs.
Volleyball (hitter) – Megan Dunlavy, Simpson College, Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf
Dunlavy, a sophomore middle hitter, led the Storm with a .475 attack percentage as Simpson went 4-1 during the week, including a 3-1 showing at the Elmhurst Invitational. She ranked second on the team with 53 kills and nine blocks.
Volleyball (libero/DS) – Caiti Hladky, Cornell College, Fort Lupton, Colo./Valley
Hladky, a sophomore libero, led the Rams with 32 digs while helping the team go 2-0 last week. Cornell improved to 18-7 and is currently sporting its best winning percentage in a season (.720) since 1988.
Men’s Soccer (offense) – Chris Talac, University of Dubuque, Naperville, Ill./Naperville
Talac, a senior forward, came off the bench on Senior Day to score a goal and assist on two others to help the Spartans remain undefeated in IIAC action (12-1-2, 5-0 IIAC).
Men’s Soccer (defense) – Nate Minkel, Loras College, Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown
Minkel, a senior defender, was a key cog for Loras defensively while also contributing a goal and an assist offensively against Wartburg to keep the Duhawks unbeaten in the Iowa Conference. He also added an assist in a 5-0 win at Coe Oct. 14.
Women’s Soccer (offense) – Kate Young, Loras College, Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah
Young, a sophomore forward, scored two goals, including the game-winner, at Coe Oct. 14, and also netted the game-tying goal against in the 80th minute against No. 7 Wartburg Oct. 17.
Women’s Soccer (defense) – Hannah Wright, Luther College, W. St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Acad.
Wright, a junior goalkeeper, ran her streak of consecutive shutouts to four with wins over Buena Vista (5-0) and Wis.-Platteville (3-0), and a tie at Gustavus Adolphus (0-0).
Women’s Cross Country – Anna Kraayenbrink, Wartburg College, Sioux Center, Iowa/Sioux Center
Kraayenbrink, a senior, led No. 14-ranked Wartburg for sixth time in seven meets this fall. She claimed the individual championship by 7.2 seconds in a multi-divisional field that included runners from North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Northern Illinois, and the University of Minnesota. The Knights finished fifth out of 27 teams with 154 points.
Men’s Cross Country – Andrew Tobben, Cornell College, Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia
Tobben, a junior, set a personal 8-kilometer record in posting a 32-second victory at the Running of the Cows Oct. 17 at Carleton. He posted his fourth top-five finish this fall and claimed his third career meet title. Tobben led the Rams to their second team championship this season and beat runner-up Carleton, which was ranked one spot ahead of the Rams at No. 9 in the Central Region Poll.
Women’s Tennis – Coe College doubles team of Andrea Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and Michelle Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus)
Andrea, a senior, and Michelle, a freshman, teamed to capture the Flight A doubles title at the Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Championships, topping Luther’s Katy Lindstrom and Fran Fairfield 8-3 in the final. The pair became the third straight Coe tandem to capture the IIAC’s top doubles title. Andrea Schupbach also captured her second individual title after teaming with Molly Fiala to win the 2007 Flight A doubles title.
Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.
- Football – Central senior running back David Zachary (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) ran for 174 yards on 28 carries to establish new career highs in both categories. He has topped the 100-yard mark in six of seven games this season.
- Football – Coe sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) completed 25-of-45 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 Kohawk win at Wartburg. It was the third time this season Boyle has completed 25 or more passes, with all three ranking in the top five in school history. He also rushed 20 tims for 66 yards and two scores.
- Football – Buena Vista junior linebacker Daniel Mikels (Logan, Iowa/Logan-Magnolia) matched a career-high with six stops, while setting a new career mark in tackles for loss (3), as he helped a Beaver rush defense hold the Rams to their third-lowest rushing output of the season.
- Volleyball – Cornell senior middle hitter Laura Dudgeon (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit .465 with 21 kills and only one attack error in 43 attempts in leading the Rams to a 2-0 mark last week.
- Volleyball – Wartburg sophomore middle blocker Sofie Swift (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) moved to within three blocks of 100 for the season with two solo and two assisted blocks in a three-set sweep of Coe Oct. 14. Her effort helped keep the Knights alone atop the Iowa Conference and continued Wartburg’s best conference start since 2005. She also continued streaks of nine consecutive matches with a block (solo or assist) and three in wich she has recorded two-or-more solo blocks.
- Men’s Soccer – Loras junior forward Miguel Bonilla (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-0 Duhawk victory at Coe Oct. 14.
- Men’s Soccer – Simpson freshman midfielder Jeremy Reinert (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) netted a diving header in the 84th minute to help Simpson earn a 1-1 tie at Coe Oct. 17.
- Men’s Soccer – Dubuque sophomore goalkeeper Nick Kasper (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell) has figured in eight Spartan shutouts this season, helping to hold Central (1-0) and Buena Vista (6-0) scoreless last week.
- Women’s Soccer – Dubuque junior Sara Fassbinder (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) recorded a goal and two assists in both of Dubuque’s victories last week, a 4-0 win at Central Oct. 14 and a 5-0 home win over Buena Vista Oct. 17.
- Women’s Soccer – Loras junior goalkeeper Katie Chambers (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./St. Edward) returned from a knee injury to contribute in a Duhawk win at Coe (1-0) and a tie against Wartburg (2-2).
- Women’s Cross Country – Loras junior Tara Kilburg (LaMotte, Iowa/Andrew) captured the meet championship at the Dr. Robert Tucker Loras Invitational Oct. 16. She completed the 6-kilometer course in 24:05, four seconds ahead of second place. Kilburg also led Loras to the team title with a near perfect team score of 16.
- Men’s Cross Country – Coe sophomore Andrew Dewar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) finished 55th in a field of 551 runners at the Wis.-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational Oct. 17. He completed the 8-kilometer course in 25:24.90, 1:09 behind the meet champion, leading the Kohawks to a 14th-place team finish (401 points).
