SIMPSON'S GOSHIA AND LUTHER'S McGIVNEY
NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
SIX PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK NAMED IN FOUR SPORTS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College swimmer Keely Goshia (Mead, Colo./Niwot) and Luther College football player Kyle McGivney (Apple River, Ill./Warren) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 15. The Conference also announced the six Performers of the Week in the Conference’s four sports in competition during the previous week.

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Keely Goshia, Simpson College, Mead, Colo./Niwot
Goshia, a freshman, shattered the Simpson school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a winning time of 2:30.07 at the Morningside Invitational. She also placed third in the 200 IM, fifth in the 100 backstroke and swam on a pair of third-place relays. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week)

Football (defense) – Kyle McGivney, Luther College, Apple River, Ill./Warren
McGivney, a junior linebacker, tallied 14 tackles (8 solo), blocked two punts and broke up the final pass of the game to secure Luther’s 20-17 victory over Loras. His second blocked punt was scooped up by teammate Bruce Clark and returned 12 yards for a touchdown. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Football (offense) – Colton Hansen, University of Dubuque, Olin, Iowa/Olin Consolidated
Hansen, a senior quarterback, threw for 427 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-21 win at Buena Vista. The win gave the Spartans and first-year head coach Stan Zweifel a fourth-place IIAC finish. He also helped wide receiver Michael Zweifel break single-season IIAC records for receptions (88) and receiving yards (1,236).

Football (special teams) – Seth Streeter, Luther College, Prairie City, Iowa/Prairie City-Monroe
Streeter, a freshman placekicker, kicked the game-winning field goal with five seconds remaining to give Luther a 20-17 victory over Loras. He was 2-of-3 on field goals for the game. He also averaged 48.8 yards on four kickoffs.

Wrestling – John Helgerson, Wartburg College, West Union, Iowa/North Fayette
Helgerson, a junior heavyweight, placed second at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, posting a pair of wins by fall and another by decision over second-seeded Eric Thompson 5-3 in the opener. His lone loss was to NCAA Division I-ranked David Zabriskie of Iowa State in the championship.

Men’s Swimming & Diving – Zach Gries, Loras College, Byron, Ill./Byron
Gries, a senior, won the 100 backstroke (57.56), 200 backstroke (2:08.71), 200 IM (2:08.19), and swam the second leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:24.53) at the Monmouth Invitational. The Duhawks won the team title with 608 points.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

  • Football – Buena Vista senior wide receiver Bryce Meyer (Lawton, Iowa/Lawton-Bronson) set single-game career-highs in catches (9) and yards (154) in his final collegiate game, a 31-21 loss to Dubuque. He also returned four kickoffs for 62 yards.
  • Football – Coe sophomore quarterback Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) threw for 209 yads and ran for 31 more, scoring the Kohawks’ first three touchdowns on runs of 1, 1, and 4 yards in Coe’s 56-7 rout of archrival Cornell. He also broke Coe’s single-season school record for completions with a 17-yard completion to Tyler Takes in the first quarter.
  • Football – Wartburg senior quarterback Nick Yordi (Solon, Iowa/Solon) helped lead Wartburg to its sixth win of the season with a 14-of-25, 248-yard passing day against Simpson. He tied Wartburg’s career passing touchdown record at 59 with two in the game and went over 200 yards passing for the seventh time in his career.
  • Football – Simpson senior linebacker Cody Jensen (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) posted 13 tackles (6 solo) in a 42-31 loss at Wartburg, ending the season charting double-digit tackles in his last four collegiate games.
  • Football – Coe freshman defensive lineman Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa/Waukon) tallied nine tackles in a 56-7 win over Cornell, including three sacks. In his freshman season, Weymiller broke the Coe single-season school record for sacks with 11.
  • Football – Simpson senior defensive back/kick returner John Wolfe (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Abraham Lincoln) added to his already school record for kickoff return yards in a single season with four returns for 106 yards. He finished the season with 736 return yards on 30 returns (24.5 average). Wolfe also made eight tackles (4 solo) and broke up a pass.
  • Wrestling – Simpson junior 141-pounder Caleb Brus (Creston, Iowa/Creston) won the 141-pound weight class at the season-opening Knox Invitational, defeating Central’s Josh Atwell in a 10-2 major decision in the championship match to claim the first tournament crown of his collegiate career.
  • Wrestling – Buena Vista junior 184-pounder Julian Mancha (St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt) won his first match of the year in thrilling fashion, defeating Dubuque’s Sam Johnson 4-2 in overtime on a last-second takedown. It was the first action for the 2008 NCAA qualifier since the beginning of the 2008-09 season when he suffered a season-ending injury.
  • Men’s Swimming & Diving – Luther senior Spencer Robbins (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley) helped lead Luther to a 125-98 victory over Wis.-Whitewater Nov. 14. He won the 200 butterfly (2:00.40), swam the opening leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:40.27), and swam the second leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:17.99).
  • Women’s Swimming & Diving – Loras sophomore Alex Proctor (Tipton, Iowa/Tipton) won the 100 freestyle (56.83) and swam on Loras’ winning 400 medley (4:20.08) and 400 freestyle (3:55.70) relays. She also placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.17).
  • Women’s Swimming & Diving – Luther senior Sara Kessler (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) won the 200 backstroke (2:19.22) and also swam the opening leg of the 400 medley relay that broke the pool record (4:14.38), but finished second by 0.11 seconds. She also finished third in the 50 freestyle (26.19).
